Soil, coco or hydro: where should I start? The growing medium is one of the first big decisions and shapes how much care your grow needs and how fast it grows. There is no "best" medium, only the right one for your goals. This guide compares the three classics and gives you a clear recommendation.

In brief: soil is the most forgiving (great for the first grow), coco the fast all-rounder with more control, hydro the high-performance system for the advanced. New to it? Read the beginner's guide first.

Soil: the forgiving classic

Soil brings soil life and a buffer with it: it evens out small feeding and pH mistakes and is the most forgiving. In return the plant grows a little more slowly, and you have less direct control over the feeding.

Advantages: error-tolerant, cheap, uncomplicated.
Disadvantages: slower pace, less fine control.
For whom: beginners and anyone who likes it relaxed.

Coco: the fast all-rounder

Coco substrate is inert, it supplies hardly any nutrients itself. So you feed the plant entirely via the nutrient solution. That gives you full control and a high growth rate, but requires more regular feeding and watering. CalMag is practically mandatory here.

Advantages: fast growth, lots of control, good error tolerance for a hydro-like medium.
Disadvantages: feed and water more often, CalMag needed.
For whom: ambitious beginners and the advanced.

Hydro: the high-performance system

In hydroponics the roots grow directly in the nutrient solution (or an inert carrier material). This enables top yields and pace, but reacts to mistakes immediately. You have to monitor pH and EC closely.

Advantages: maximum pace and yield, full control.
Disadvantages: little error tolerance, more equipment and attention.
For whom: the advanced.

What changes about feeding

Our BudXXL line works across media. The basic schedule stays the same, you just adjust a few settings:

  • Soil: forgives pauses — it is no problem if you skip a feeding. Do not double up afterwards, simply continue with the schedule.
  • Coco: feed lightly with every watering, run CalMag consistently alongside.
  • Hydro: fine-tune the concentration via the EC value, monitor pH closely.

The specific amounts are in the BudXXL feeding schedule, correct measuring in the guide pH and EC.

Our recommendation for getting started

If you want to learn in a relaxed way, start with soil, it forgives the most. If faster growth appeals to you and you are ready to feed a little more regularly, coco is the ideal next step. Hydro pays off once you enjoy the tech and have gathered experience.
