CanG: what is allowed for home growing?

Since 1 April 2024, the Consumer Cannabis Act (CanG) has been in force in Germany. This makes the private cultivation and possession of cannabis legal for adults under certain conditions. This article summarises the key points for home growers in plain terms, as orientation, not legal advice.

Who may, and who may not?

  • Permitted exclusively for adults aged 18 and over.
  • Everything applies to personal use only. Sale and passing on (especially to minors) are prohibited.
  • Cannabis and plants must be stored protected from access by children and adolescents.

Growing at home

  • Up to three plants at the same time per adult are permitted in your own home.
  • Cultivation must be private and protected (not freely accessible, secured against theft and access by minors).
  • You may keep the harvest for personal consumption, within the possession limits.

Where consumption is restricted

Even though possession is permitted, there are clear consumption bans, above all to protect minors:

  • Not within line of sight (100 m) of schools, day-care centres, children's and youth facilities, playgrounds and sports facilities.
  • Restricted in pedestrian zones during the daytime.
  • Consideration for non-consumers and non-smoker protection.

Cannabis social clubs (cultivation associations)

Alongside home cultivation, the law has permitted non-commercial cultivation associations since 1 July 2024: clubs with a limited number of members that grow collectively and pass the harvest on to their members in a controlled way, expressly without any intention to make a profit. For many, this is a legal way to obtain seeds or cuttings.

And in road traffic?

A statutory THC limit applies to driving. If you have consumed, you should not get behind the wheel until the effect has safely worn off. Serious consequences can follow here.
