Three leaves at a node instead of two, a half-white leaf, a shoot that looks like two grown together? Cannabis allows itself more deviations from the norm than most guides show. Most are harmless, some are a trait of certain genetics, and a very few are a warning sign. This post helps you tell them apart, so you neither toss a healthy plant out of fright nor keep a sick one out of calm.
How to tell anomaly from problem
- One plant, one pattern, stable: almost always genetics or a one-off slip. Observe, do nothing.
- Several plants, same pattern, at the same time: environment. Check light, temperature, water, nutrients.
- Pattern spreads, new leaves ever smaller or more twisted, growth stalls: pest or viroid. Look closely, isolate when in doubt.
The harmless ones: quirks of genetics
Three leaves per node (whorled phyllotaxis)
Instead of two opposite leaves, three grow in a circle, often with three side shoots per tier. It looks like a bonus and it is one: more shoots per height. The pattern usually disappears again in flowering and the plant grows perfectly normally. Cuttings taken from it do not reliably keep the trait.
White or yellow leaf sections (variegation)
Sharply defined white, cream or pale yellow areas, often only on one half of a leaf or in one sector of the plant. These cells lack chlorophyll. The difference from a deficiency: a deficiency runs in from the leaf tip or edge, affects whole tiers of leaves and moves. Variegation has hard edges, stays where it is and appears randomly distributed. The plant loses a little photosynthetic capacity, nothing else. Completely white seedlings (albinos), however, die as soon as the seed reserves are used up, and that cannot be saved.
Duckfoot leaves (webbed leaves)
The leaf fingers are fused far out towards the tips, the leaf looks like a duck's foot or a maple leaf. This is a stable, heritable trait that has been bred deliberately into some strains. It makes no difference to growth or yield.
Fused shoots (fasciation, polyploidy)
A stem suddenly becomes flat and wide like a ribbon, leaves cluster, the tip splits into two or more heads. In fasciation the growing tip has lost its order, usually spontaneously. Polyploid plants with a doubled set of chromosomes show thicker stems, larger, more leathery leaves and often such ribboning too. Both are harmless, sometimes even desirable. The buds on the double heads are normal, just often unequal in size.
Twins from one seed
Two seedlings emerge from one seed. It happens occasionally, and you can keep both: separate early and carefully while the roots are short, or leave both in the pot and remove the weaker one later. Mind your permitted number of plants, which counts plants, not seeds.
Single-finger leaves late in flowering
Towards the end of flowering many plants only produce leaves with one or three fingers up top instead of five to nine. That is normal and a sign that the plant has switched to flowers rather than leaf mass. No reason to worry and none for extra feeding.
Buds growing from a leaf (leaf buds)
A small bud forms at the base of a leaf or right on the leaf stalk. Rare, harmless, genetic and not a matter of care. The bud ripens with the rest but is not worth much. Simply leave it.
The ambiguous ones: look, then decide
Twisted, curled new leaves
It can be genetics, but mostly it is something else: heat or light stress (leaves roll up like canoes, top tier affected, lamp too close), overfeeding (leaf tips claw downwards, dark glossy green, burnt tips), broad mites (new growth blistered, twisted, bronze-coloured, barely visible even with a loupe) or a viroid (see below). First check lamp distance and EC, then the loupe, then isolate.
Bananas in the female flower
Yellow, elongated anthers between the flower bracts that appear without a male flower. That is hermaphroditism, triggered by stress (light leaks during the dark period, heat, irregular lighting, harvesting too late) or by genetics. You can pluck single bananas with tweezers and take the plant to the end. If a plant shows them early and in numbers, it is a risk to the whole room, because it pollinates everything around it. Do not take cuttings from such a plant.
The warning sign: hop latent viroid
Small, twisted, brittle leaves, short internodes, cuttings that barely root, and buds that stay loose and form little resin. This is called "dudding" and comes from hop latent viroid (HLVd), which spreads via cutting tools and clones and has infected a large share of production areas in North America. There is no treatment. What helps: disinfect tools between every plant, isolate suspicious plants, get new genetics only from a trustworthy source. More in the pests and diseases guide.

Why you should document this
Anomalies are the best reason to keep a grow diary. A photo from the day it first appeared and a line about what happened at the same time answers the question three weeks later whether it was genetics or your tent. And if you have a plant with a stable peculiarity, you know where it came from when you take the next cutting.
